Our investigation attempts to disclose the basic methodological consequences that arise from a consistent demarcation of the two abstraction levels in phonology. This consistent demarcation has inevitably resulted in a clash with the entire system of accepted views in the domain of crucial problems which are encountered in theoretical phonology. Criticism of these views should not be taken in any way as an attempt to minimize the historical merits of the prominent linguists who have erected the edifice of contemporary theoretical phonology. On the contrary, we want to stress the great debt we owe to a number of authors whose views we have not wholly been able to share.
