This book is the story of a phenomenon. One uses the word “phenomenon” because the Great Red Scare following World War I was precisely that. Few occurrences in modern American history have been surrounded with so much mystery. Few have involved so much exaggeration and fear. None was so fraught with rank intolerance and mob violence. And for sheer excitement and drama it certainly has no peer.
